3 Bottles of 2017 Kila Cava
This sparkling wine from Penedes is made from 40% Xarel·lo, 40% Macabeu, and 20% Parellada using Methode champenoise. It is light gold in color, and has ripe orchard/pit fruit aromas that are complemented by subtle herb and candied orange zest nuances. It is broad and spicy on the palate, displaying pear nectar and honey flavors and a touch of fennel. Closes smooth and fleshy, with good cling and echoing spiciness.
3 Bottles of 2019 La Cana Albarino
This Albarino from Rias Baixas is a wine that Jorge Ordóñez and his winemaking team craft to demonstrate the potential that Albariño shows as a high quality, serious varietal. As Jorge was the first person to export this variety, he has a tremendous passion and appreciation for Albariño, and he decries the use of Albariño to make simplistic, mass-produced, and commerical wines. La Caña demonstrates the complexity, intensity, and longevity Albariño can achieve when sourced from old vineyards and using serious winemaking practices. It has a mineral-driven nose that includes oceanic notes of sea brine to go with apple and light oak scents. Sizzling acidity is in the green-apple realm, while this Albariño tastes of Granny Smith apple, gooseberry, oak and lees. A tangy, pinched finish is salty and firm.
3 Bottles of 2016 Mira Salinas Monastrell
This 100% Monastrell from Alicante is grown in Vineyards planted between 20 and 50 years ago with an average age of 35 years. Its deep ruby/plum color is followed by a bouquet of smoked black fruits, earth, meat, and spice. It’s rich, medium to full-bodied, has beautiful fruit, good acidity, and plenty of tannins, and it’s a classic, balanced Monastrell that more than over-delivers at the price.
3 Bottles of 2016 Breca Garnacha
This Old Vine Garnacha from Calatayud was #29 on the Wine Spectator Top 100 list in 2018. It is made of the oldest clone of Grenache in the world, this wine comes from old mountain vineyards planted between 1900 and 1940. Unterraced, dry farmed and organic, the grapes are impacted by intense temperature swings and unique soils––producing wines of deep color and lively acidity. A wine with a deep color and character, as well as lively acidity. It is characterized by aromas of ripe black fruit compote, overlaid with spices such as black pepper. There is an obvious minerality to the wine, proceeding from vineyards’ diverse range of soil types. The soils range from iron rich red slate and clay to black slate.
